Tuesday 6-10-08 SEVERE WEATHER...North south line of thunderstorms developed in NY aided by strong jet stream in right rear quad jet max or highest velocities exiting the region causing upper level divergence in the atmosphere with upward vertical motion. This was also coupled with a cold front edging east and colder air aloft moving in making for extremely unstable atmosphere for thunderstorms to feed upon. These thunderstorms shifted northeast in rapid fashion in some cases Burlington Vermont radar, indicated forward movement of 70 mph with the northern extensions of the line where it bowed across northern NY. and into or south of the Montreal area.
The southern flank of this bow generated another line of thunderstorms across the entire Champlain Valley extending south into Rutland County and then built momentum with increased thunderstorms strength as it pushed toward and over the Central and northern Green mountains...shown on radar...
This carried across Washington and Lamoille counties and Franklin and Orleans counties producing considerable damage due to gust front just ahead of the cells, and damaging micro-bursts within the thunderstorms cells.
This first wave caused most of the damage while the second wave occurred closer to the actual cold front, after some hours of redevelopment and re-boiling of the lower atmosphere. Another round of gust fronts ahead of a north-northeast-south-southwest line pummeled the state producing damage across central and southern Vermont during the evening. Caledonia county also saw widespread damaging winds with the second wave as the storms powered up while shifting toward New Hampshire. See second wave on radar here...
Both of these particular waves produced histories into surrounding states and adjacent Canada.
The thunderstorms were aided by strong upper level jet stream winds, bright sunshine and surface heating which boiled the lower atmosphere and the leading edge of colder air or cold front triggering the weather mechanisms.
